In honor of Earth Day 2023, retired trucker and Texas resident Bill Johnson has decided to make a bold move. Instead of selling his old Kenworth cab, he’s converted it into a spacious chicken coop for his growing flock of hens.
Johnson, who has been raising chickens as a hobby for years, saw an opportunity to repurpose his old rig after it had been sitting unused for several years. He said that the Kenworth’s cab was perfect for his chickens, as it provided ample space for them to roost and nest, and its sturdy construction made it the perfect shelter for his feathered friends.
“I spent so much time in that truck over the years, it seemed like a shame to just sell it for scrap,” Johnson said. “But when I saw how happy my chickens were in there, I knew I had made the right decision.”
Johnson’s organic farm is home to a variety of free-ranging animals, and the chickens are especially important to him because they provide fresh eggs for his family and friends. He said that the Kenworth cab was a natural fit for his needs, as it was designed for long-haul routes and provided his chickens with a safe and secure place to sleep.
“I’m looking forward to bigger and better eggs from my hens now that they have such a comfortable home,” Johnson said. “And who knows, maybe I’ll start a trend among retired truckers who want to repurpose their old rigs.”
While Johnson admits that his chicken coop is a bit of an unconventional use for a truck, he said that he’s proud to be doing his part for the environment by repurposing instead of disposing of his old vehicle.
“It’s all about sustainability,” he said. “And if my chickens are happy, then I’m happy.”
