In a stunning development, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that it is considering a new mandate requiring all trucks to have side underride guards installed. The move is aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and injuries caused by accidents involving trucks and passenger vehicles.
However, the trucking industry is not taking the news lying down. In fact, they’ve come up with a rather unique solution to the problem: giant inflatable side underride guards.
That’s right, instead of having heavy metal guards that add weight and decrease fuel efficiency, trucking companies are proposing that they install inflatable versions that can be quickly deployed in the event of an accident.
According to a spokesperson for one trucking company, “We believe that these inflatable guards will not only provide the same level of protection as metal guards, but they’ll also be much more fun to look at. Imagine a giant truck driving down the highway with two giant inflatable arms sticking out from the sides. It’s like the truck is giving you a big hug!”
Critics of the proposal have pointed out that inflatable guards might not be as effective as metal ones and that they could be punctured or damaged in a collision. But the trucking industry remains undeterred.
“We’re confident that our inflatable guards will be just as safe as metal ones,” said the spokesperson. “And think about all the money we’ll save on fuel costs! Plus, we can customize the inflatables with fun designs and logos. Who wouldn’t want to drive behind a truck with a giant inflatable unicorn sticking out the side?”
The NHTSA has not yet responded to the proposal, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on any developments. In the meantime, keep an eye out for trucks with giant inflatable arms on the highway. You never know when you might need a hug!
