California-based truck driving instructor Bob “Fit Trucker” Thompson has taken an amusing approach to educating his high school students about the importance of staying fit. He has revamped his Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) curriculum, incorporating a fitness app that makes students chase imaginary cargo!
Thompson, who has been teaching young aspiring truckers for over a decade, believes in the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the trucking profession. However, he found that traditional fitness methods didn’t resonate with his tech-savvy students.
“I tried everything,” Thompson said, “Workout DVDs, classroom aerobics, even getting a Zumba instructor! Nothing seemed to work. Then it hit me – why not use technology to my advantage?”
He collaborated with a local tech startup to create an app that makes fitness fun. Dubbed “Catch the Cargo,” the app sends students on virtual missions to ‘catch’ elusive packages by running, jumping, or even dancing. The more physically demanding the movement, the more valuable the cargo.
“I’ve seen students doing the moonwalk to catch a crate of virtual chickens,” said a chuckling Thompson. “I even saw one student doing cartwheels across the field to secure an imaginary shipment of toy unicorns. It’s hilarious and heartwarming at the same time.”
The innovative program has been a hit among the students, making fitness an eagerly anticipated part of the day. One student, Cindy “Future Hauler” Martinez, said, “Who knew fitness could be so fun? I can’t wait to run around chasing virtual cargo!”
As Thompson’s curriculum gains attention, other schools are considering incorporating similar methods. So, don’t be surprised if you see a group of high school students prancing around, eyes on their smartphones, chasing after the next virtual cargo delivery!
