Politicians and economists scramble to fix an economy slowed by inflation, production delays, and other problematic developments. While they look to books, studies, and each other for answers, it seems the solution is right in front of them- and the experts are none other than the country’s car mechanics.
“Something’s stalled, it’s an easy fix,” Michigan truck mechanic Helen Kartweiler told reporters at a press conference set up by the American Association of American Mechanics. “Put some oil on it.”
Other mechanics around the nation agree. Harrison Peale in Tucson also spoke at the event: “We’ve got an economy that’s just not moving. The brakes are jammed, the belts are caught, and the gears are gummed up. What we need isn’t bickering in Washington. We need oil. We need to get this capitalist system all lubed up and just watch how fast it gets back in the fast lane.”
Economists are skeptical of this advice but are so desperate any possibility seems worth exploring. “I don’t think that’s how the economy works, but, well, nothing else does,” one Washington insider admitted. “Unfortunately, I don’t know how to change the oil. I always just take my car in and let them do it. So this is really out of my wheelhouse, so to speak.”
The nation’s mechanics quickly assure the public they know what they’re doing. Ms. Kartweiler confirmed, “Just haul that economy into the closest shop. We’ll get some synthetic Penzoil running through the system, and this whole thing will be running smoothly as the day George Washington made it.”
