A top-flight team of art historians and researchers announced today that their x-ray scan of La Giaconda, popularly known as the Mona Lisa, has revealed that the artist painted it over a poster he had made for a Florentine trucking company.
Beneath the famous lady with the enigmatic smile is an image of what must be the world’s first 18-wheeler. Designed by Da Vinci, it featured a primitive cab with a windshield mounted atop 6 horses. It pulls a canvas-covered box trailer with the company’s name, Autotrasporto Puntuale, painted on it. At the top is the slogan ‘Addio alle consegne in ritardo’ (Goodbye to late deliveries). Ironically, Da Vinci was late delivering it to his client, which was rejected, so he reused the panel for the Mona Lisa.
Interestingly, ‘Goodbye to late deliveries’ is now the slogan of a midwife working in Florence today.
