The pageantry of the Middle Ages has returned to Evansville, Indiana…sort of. Tournament jousting has made a comeback in a literally big way, with 18-wheelers instead of horses being the only change.
Entrepreneur Wayne Skammer has mounted 30-foot lances onto the side of each colorfully-painted cab, with a target shield on the front bumper. If the opponent strikes the shield, a mechanism explosively disconnects the trailer and tips the cab over, which releases colored smoke and a loud bang. Drivers use a joystick to control the tip of the lances.
Crowds have been enthusiastic, especially when, after 3 passes with no winner, the drivers have to come out of their rigs in steel armor and fight on foot with tire irons.
