As jet fuel prices fly into the literal stratosphere, the U.S. Navy’s renowned Blue Angels flight demonstration team faces severe cutbacks. As a temporary cost-saving measure, they have been ordered to switch from F/A-18 Hornets (22,000 lbs. of thrust, max speed 1,190 mph) to Western Star 4900 trucks (500 horsepower, max speed 86 mph).
“The biggest part of the learning curve is that the new equipment had no ejection seat,” said Angels pilot Chet Pfuell. “When something goes sideways in a truck, you must ride it out. Though doing high-speed maneuvers in 2 dimensions instead of 3 does help a guy relax some. And it’s a lot easier to eat a burger in our new rides.”
At current prices, the expected cost savings from switching from jet fuel to diesel is expected to top $49.
