Apple has long been an innovator in many industries, but they are also entering long-haul trucking. The company just announced that this summer, they will debut a new feature: “Holographic Copilot.”
The shimmery, ethereal figure will be projected in three dimensions in the passenger seat of any truck cab to keep the driver company for drives over two hours. Industry insiders are very excited.
“It’s a lonely job most days,” said Kelly Brown, a long-haul rig driver for over twenty years. “It’ll be nice to have someone to talk to. Especially if they can’t say anything, I don’t want to hear back.”
Indeed, the holographic copilot will be customizable in conversation topics, response formatting, and visuals. Several celebrities have signed on to include their likeness in the available options. Do you ever want to drive 14 hours through Utah sitting next to a perfectly chatty Brad Pitt or Meg Ryan? Now you can.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing what Nicholas Cage has to say,” Ms. Brown admitted. “I mean, he won’t say anything I haven’t already clicked on in the options setting, but still, he seems like a cool guy.”
There are some limitations to the feature. It is only available on drives over two hours for what Apple admits is “no apparent reason.” The holograms will also not be able to physically do anything, like drive the vehicle, change the radio, or take the lid off your juice because they have no physical presence whatsoever.
Kelly Brown doesn’t seem to mind. “I think it’s great. Won’t add to the weight of the vehicle, but now I’ll have a friend. My new friend, holographic Nicholas Cage.”
