In recent weeks, the diesel price has skyrocketed, causing logistic and trucking companies to resort to desperate measures to keep their costs low. While a typical response has been to decrease deadhead travel, optimize multi-location trips, and educate drivers on fuel conservation, one company has had an entirely different approach.
The company’s CEO announced that the organization would only accept new hires weighing less than 50 pounds. Their purpose, he stated, was to “save any and all diesel possible – down to the final pound.” Controversy erupted once the announcement was made public, with many angry at the decision. Jeff Smith, the founder, said that he was “startled and extremely impressed” with the ingenuity and bravery to make such a call.
Others say that the choice is discriminatory, though it isn’t clear who the change would actually benefit. “Every extra pound,” Andy said, “is an extra .000000001 cent. That adds up over time, and we don’t have a blank check to spend on diesel right now.”
According to a company representative, not a single person has applied to trucking positions since the following guidance went into effect. According to U.S. Census data, no Americans currently weigh 50 pounds or less and are eligible to obtain their CDL and drive a semi-truck. Per an inside source, the actual reasoning of the announcement could be to squash a union and not allow any additional drivers to add fuel to the fire. “Look,” Andy said to a group of protestors outside his house. “Even I couldn’t be a driver. I weigh 206 pounds, and I made this decision!” He quietly muttered about unionization before smiling, waving to the crowd, and stepping into a Blue Origin space rocket.”
