Montana cop and lifelong hunting enthusiast Bob “Birdie” Blownaweigh was sitting in his cruiser radar-gunning highway traffic a few months ago when it came to him: “we always get the speeding truckers; it’s never in doubt and a little bit dull. How about evening the odds some and giving them a sporting chance?”, which is how the Montana State Big Rig Pursuit Team was born.
Blownaweigh’s brainstorm led to a fleet of a dozen specially-modified semis with box trailers. Fitted with lights and sirens, the new police trucks aim to make it a closer race to catch lead-footed drivers. The current count is 182 tickets and no failures. A driver who preferred to remain anonymous said that with the cop trucks using rocket motors with 10,000 pounds of thrust, maybe they had a more liberal definition of “sporting chance” than he did.
