In a data breach that will go down in the annals of cybersecurity as one of the most amusing, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) accidentally released an entirely different kind of data yesterday: the personal karaoke playlists of thousands of its truckers.
Instead of the usual panic and turmoil that follow such breaches, highways and truck stops turned into impromptu karaoke stages, as truckers and their colleagues took it upon themselves to see who could out-sing, out-dance, and outperform each other.
A brief investigation revealed that the breach was due to a rookie coder’s blunder, inadvertently linking the DoT database with “Karaoke Kings”, a popular app used by many truckers during their downtime on the road. The result? The guilty pleasures of many an unsuspecting trucker made public, from ’80s power ballads to pop diva anthems.
While the Department has apologized for the breach and reassured everyone that no sensitive information was compromised, the trucking community seems to have embraced the mix-up. Several truckers have declared a national Karaoke competition aptly named “Sing Your Route.”
“We all need a little fun and distraction from the long hauls,” said one trucker who was belting out an impressive rendition of “I Will Always Love You” at a truck stop. “Bring it on!”
As of now, the DoT is working with cybersecurity experts to prevent future breaches. However, many truckers hope that this won’t be the end of the hilarious – and musical – results of this one-of-a-kind data breach.
