FMCSA Approves “Nap Brakes” to Combat Driver Fatigue

In an effort to tackle driver fatigue without expanding HOS rules, the FMCSA has approved a controversial new safety mechanism: Nap Brakes.

The system is simple – once activated, the truck physically refuses to move for 26 minutes. The doors lock, a gentle lullaby plays through the speakers, and a lavender-scented mist is released from the A/C vents. A voice assistant gently whispers, “Shhh… it’s okay. Close your eyes.”

“Sometimes you don’t need a full break – just a little emotional reboot,” said FMCSA’s wellness coordinator Linda Slipp. “And if you won’t take one willingly, your truck will now stage an intervention.”

The trial period has seen mixed results.

“My rig parked itself on the shoulder and wouldn’t move,” said tanker driver Nathan “Microsleep” Mullins. “I wasn’t even tired – just cranky from gas station sushi. But I napped, and I’m not mad about it.”

Some drivers welcomed the unexpected pause. “I hit Nap Brake by accident and had the best sleep of my life,” said long-hauler Carla Mintz. “Woke up with a poem in my head and a craving for celery.”

Opposition has come from dispatchers, who argue that trucks refusing to move mid-load poses logistical problems. “One driver engaged Nap Brakes five times in a shift,” said fleet manager Don Carlos. “He basically had a spa day on I-80.”

As a compromise, newer models may allow for Mood-Based Nap Brakes, engaging only when sensors detect eye fluttering, steering wheel hugging, or radio-station indecisiveness.

The ATA remains cautious. “We support rest, but this sounds like a therapy couch on wheels,” said one spokesperson.

Still, the FMCSA is hopeful. “We’re not saying naps solve everything,” said Slipp, “but fewer angry CB rants would be nice.”
