According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, I-75 has been named the deadliest interstate in America. The peer-reviewed study found that while other interstates and highways had more crashes, none had more deaths than I-75. In 2021, a total of 24 truck drivers died of boredom in 2021 while sitting in traffic caused by construction.
Construction on I-75 has been underway since Benjamin Franklin was President of the United States of America. After a recent extension of the project into the year 2075, it doesn’t appear that semi-truck drivers will be able to know a life outside of the interstate’s construction – and driving the road is now more dangerous than ever. “It wouldn’t be nearly as deadly if the interstate went through states more exciting than Kentucky and Ohio,” a lead researcher said. “You really can’t blame those poor drivers.”
The state of the construction and extreme traffic have become a controversial topic after a 2020 report showed that over 100 babies had been born on the interstate. Most births were in trucks en-route to a hospital when construction wouldn’t allow the vehicles to continue. Truck drivers have demanded increased pay for I-75 travel, which employers have been forced to accept.
The I-75 construction, while unlikely to ever be completed, serves as a memory for many. Some, a place of unexpected birth, others – death from boredom.
