15,000 miles per hour will normally get you ticketed within an inch of your life in a truck, but when NASA does it, the headlines read “Amazing scientific breakthrough!” and “Titanic astrophysical achievement!” and “Did my Senator really vote to use my money for that?”
That was what happened last week when our renowned space nerds crashed a space truck into a tiny asteroid, apparently to win a bet or something.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test was actually to see if we could move a space rock that was coming to wipe us out like the dinosaurs because you don’t want to leave your planetary survival up to a bunch of oil drillers led by Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck.
When asked for a comment, Willis merely said, “Armageddon is tired of people making fun of that movie.”
