In a blow to the container ship industry, a new invention allows big rigs to travel directly on the Atlantic Ocean and deliver their cargo to European markets without a middleman.
Giant inflatable wheels provide the needed buoyancy, and steel paddle blades projecting from them propel the truck along the water. The standard truck horn has been replaced by a fog horn for added safety. Steering wheels will now be old-fashioned ships’ wheels to prevent drivers’ hands from slipping off in a storm.
In the mid-Atlantic, a disused oil platform has been repurposed as the world’s first floating truck stop, where drivers can refuel their rigs and get splendid local meals such as calamari chili or herring hash.
