The iconic “running of the bulls” in Pamplona, Spain, made famous by Ernest Hemingway in his classic novel The Sun Also Rises, has bowed to pressure from animal rights activists and is no more. The bulls will still make the trip, but now the daredevils in the streets will have to risk their lives with the Running of the Bull Haulers.
Festival representative Felix Follador explained, “What can I say? Times change, and even we must change with them, no? Someone claimed it was inhumane to make animals that we plan to kill with swords for the amusement of paying customers run down a street, and so here we are.”
In a nod to tradition, each truck will take the same narrow route as the bulls once did and will have bull horns on its grill.
To increase crowd interest, a digital display above the windshield will keep a running tally of how many runners can no longer run because of the truck.
