With the average age of a U.S. commercial truck driver nearing 50, companies have had to get creative to lure in a younger crop to get behind the wheel. The solution is to get rid of the wheel altogether.
‘It occurred to us to ask ourselves what the kids spend all their time on nowadays,’ explained Artie Fishel, president of Whack-a-Doodle Solutions. ‘Well, mine is flunking school because they play video games all night, so we decided to put game controllers where the steering wheels should be. Worked like a charm…eventually.’
He went on to say that the first experiments were a disaster, as the would-be drivers automatically thought they were playing Grand Theft Auto and destroyed 3 square blocks of Sausalito, California.
