Summer is here, and that means it is vacation time. With prices high and travel difficult, however, families need to be resourceful if they want to get out of town. That is why one local trucker, Kevin Thacker, combines work and play by bringing his family with him on his driving routes.
“It’s the best of both worlds. There’s plenty of room in the cab, plus, I’m basically getting paid on vacation,” he proudly told reporters.
The kids do not seem convinced, however. “This is the worst vacation ever,” Kevin’s 9-year-old daughter Becky told us. “We just sit there all day watching towns go by and listening to the same radio station. We don’t have internet or a pool. It sucks.”
His four-year-old son Hank agrees. “I just want to swim with dolphins.”
While Kevin did buy large amounts of snacks, including pretzels, for the trip, he has resolutely refused to incorporate a pool into his rig. “That’s ridiculous. I’m working. This truck is full of paper products heading to a St. Louis distribution center. We aren’t getting a pool.”
Kevin’s wife feels confident that while this is not the Hawaiian resort trip she imagined, the family can still make the most of the experience. “The kids hate it. They wanted dolphins, a pool, high-speed internet- but hey, we are literally making money as we go, and we have already stopped at three Olive Garden restaurants, so I think it’s a win-win.”
“If we don’t get to swim in a pool soon, I’m running away,” Becky declared from the back seat as the truck pulled out of town. The outcome of that threat was still undetermined.
