Naturally when you hear “World Fencing Championship” you think of nimble athletes in masks waving swords at one another. But the real kings and queens of fencing just wrapped up their event in Whatthefrac, Texas and let’s just say that those other fencers wouldn’t have lasted a single round.
The newly-crowned world champ is rancher and part-time trucker Ricky Twist from Bumfumpegypt, New Mexico. He set 2 national records on his way to putting up 180 yards of barbed wire 11 minutes faster than the silver medalist, Tyrone Postole. Some might say that at 6’8” and 260 lbs. our winner had an advantage, but strength doesn’t always mean speed.
Twist credits his competitive success to his side job hauling wire for a wholesaler. “When you try to take the load down at the warehouse and it’s tangled ten ways from Sunday, you get real good at stringin’ that stuff out, barbs be damned. I don’t even use gloves any more. The nerve damage in my hands is my real secret weapon.”
