With the official start of summer comes the official start of summer travel. However, with the economy in a state of worrisome flux, finding a place to stay for your vacation is harder than ever- or is it?
Many long-haul truckers have decided to cash in on the popular vacation rental phenomenon with a new offering that combines accommodation, unique experience, and sometimes, travel itself. They are renting out the backseats of their cabs on Airbnb.
“It’s been a godsend. I’m making so much money,” says the truck driver and vehicular hotelier Kenny Keystone. “That back seat is rented out four, five nights a week. A family of six was in there last weekend. Had a blast!”
The concept is simple: you stay in the back seat. That’s it. Cabs that include a bunk or living space go for about double the price of the bench seat style of seating. Sometimes the taxi is stationary, say, parked in the owner’s driveway. Sometimes, however, you stay in the back while the driver works- meaning you get a change of scenery while you enjoy your room.
“We had the best time!” After she stayed two nights in the back of a basic bench seat eighteen-wheeler, Nadia Knight told reporters. “Our host, Betty, was taking some ceiling fans to a Home Depot distribution center the entire time. We just sat there while she told us stories of the road. We ended up fifty miles away from our destination, but we got a place to sleep for $26 a night, so I’m not complaining.”
“My back was only kind of sore,” her husband Dave agreed.
No one knows where this new trend is headed, but one thing is for sure: we can get there in the backseat.
