In response to growing concerns about driver burnout and mental health, several major trucking companies have announced plans to include “stress cards” in their employee benefits packages.
The cards, which will function similarly to the “get out of jail free” cards from the board game Monopoly, will allow drivers to take a break from their stressful jobs whenever they feel overwhelmed.
According to industry insiders, the stress cards will work like this: When a driver feels like they’re at their breaking point, they can simply present their stress card to their supervisor and say something like, “Sorry, boss, I can’t handle this right now. I need to go take a nap.”
The supervisor will then be legally required to grant the driver a minimum of two hours of “stress relief” time, during which they can do whatever they want to relax and unwind. Some drivers are planning to use this time to take a nap, while others are considering more creative options, like practicing yoga or playing video games.
Of course, there are some potential downsides to the stress card system. Some worry that unscrupulous drivers might abuse the system by using their stress cards to take extended breaks or avoid difficult tasks. But most industry experts agree that the benefits of reducing driver stress and improving mental health will far outweigh any potential drawbacks.
In fact, some trucking companies are already reporting a boost in morale and productivity since introducing the stress cards. One driver, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Now I know that if things get too overwhelming, I can just whip out my stress card and take a breather. It’s a game-changer.”
So there you have it, folks. It looks like the trucking industry is taking driver mental health seriously – and they’re doing it with a healthy dose of humor to boot. Who knows? Maybe the stress card system will catch on in other industries too.
