Venetian Gondola Shortage Forces City to Row Truck Trailers

The beautiful and historic city of Venice, Italy – La Serenissima – is one of the earth’s most popular tourist destinations. Though only 55,000 people live there, 30 million people visit it yearly. So overwhelming has this crush become that the city has completely exhausted its supply of the famous gondolas that cruise its canals. Venice has desperately turned to floating truck trailers to fill the gap.

“It was the only card we had left to play,” says Mayor Mario Carti. “We find that open-top coal trailers work the best. You weld covered seats across the middle and put in a gondolier’s platform at the back, and you’re ready for business. Then, of course, the oars had to be lengthened by 20 feet.”

The so-called “party gondolas” are most in demand now, which forgo the usual romantic passenger seat for a giant mosh pit. When the ride is over, the gondolier opens the side dump and discharges his passengers into the canal, where they sober up instantly.
