Today, geologists at West Virginia University announced that they had discovered living organisms nearly a billion years old. The single-celled creatures were found inside crystals of rock salt wedged into the tread of a Peterbilt’s Road Warrior steer tire.
The rig’s driver, Ralph Rubinski of Scranton, Pennsylvania, wasn’t surprised by the headline-grabbing discovery. “Those 295/75R22.5’s tend to snatch up all manner of stuff. I found the hubcap for a ’79 Eldorado in there once, not to mention a set of serving spoons and two hippie hitchhikers.”
Encouraged by the find, WVU is sponsoring an expedition, led by famed explorer Gus Peabody, into the brake line of a Freightliner Coronado. “Who knows,” he said, “we might encounter an entire ancient civilization. We’re taking beads and trinkets to trade with them, plus some of those pine tree air freshener things.”
