Harry Brown has been driving his truck across the country for over 20 years and has seen a lot of things, but this long-suffering veteran of the industry is baffled by the increasingly popular “van life” movement.
“I just don’t get it,” Brown told reporters. “I sit in my truck ten, fourteen hours a day. It’s horrible. I hate it. I’ve been trying to break into the real estate market and transition careers for a decade, but it’s hard when you have to keep your eyes on the road. What is wrong with these kids?”
The kids Brown refers to are the thousands of young people who have given up conventional living- and working- conditions for a nomadic life of adventure and living out of converted vans, buses, and other vehicles.
One such youth, Madison Lake, adores the lifestyle. “I have a Master’s degree, but I quit my job as an engineer last year and grabbed my dog and a 1972 van I found online. I have just been driving around the country as a freelance barista. It’s amazing.”
Brown insists these people are idiots. “These people are idiots,” he explains. “I have arthritis from driving so much, my eyes are shut, and don’t get me started on how many dead-end relationships I’ve had over the years. Yeah, I’m bitter. But I’ve earned that bitterness. Driving around, taking in the sights, and enjoying your youth and freedom? It’s disgusting.”
While Brown and Lake are both firm in their opinions, only time will tell whether life on the road is a life worth pursuing.
