The world’s first demolition derby for Zambonis was held last week at a county fair in Derby, Ontario. Of course, all the machines were banged up, but one was totally and spectacularly destroyed in a crowd-pleasing explosion. A pair of minor injuries were reported, but there were plenty of ice chunks to treat the swelling.
In an event billed as “Mad Zams: Fury Road,” a dozen of the ice treatment vehicles were converted into post-apocalypse war machines. Electric saws, flame throwers, harpoons, razor-bladed hockey sticks, and much more were added to the frames. For thirty minutes, the drivers hurled (polite) insults and heavy ordnance while ramming their deadly Zambonis into anything that moved. The explosion resulted when the “Poutine Pulverizer” fired a rocket-propelled grenade into “Moose Mania.”
The winning driver, American Watt R. Freize of Duluth, Minnesota, said it was the most exhilarating 6 mph experience of his life.
