Man Insists Dog Really Is His Copilot, Can Drive Better Than He Can

Bumper stickers that read “Dog Is My Copilot” are common on the nation’s roadways. Still, one local man insists it is more than a slogan- his dog is a better driver than he is.

“Oh, no question, he’s a master on the pavement,” longtime truck driver and local resident George Pawson told reporters. “My dog Steve has the instincts of a Formula One driver, but he’s cautious. He’s a defensive driver, so I always feel safe with him at the wheel.”

Reporters and officials alike were shocked to learn that Steve, a six-year-old border collie, regularly takes the wheel on George’s long work drives.

“It’s not legal,” the police chief said. “We can’t do anything about it until we pull them over and catch the dog, I mean, Steve, operating the vehicle, but we can’t let this happen. That being said, I do want to see it. I’m really curious how he shifts gears without any thumbs.”

Border collies are known to be a particularly intelligent dog breed, but one has never been verified as a professional long-haul driver. George insists he cannot do his work without Steve, however, both in terms of logistics and also safety.

“I named him after Steve McQueen just after I brought him home from the shelter. He weighed four pounds, but I knew he was a special dog. He never gets drowsy, never texts and drives, and always uses his turn signals. I could not ask for a better co-pilot.”
