Those steep mountain gradients will be even more daunting to drive on soon, as stratospheric fuel prices have pushed trucking companies into the ultimate act of desperation: pedal-powered tractors.
Industry spokesperson Ralph “Skid” Marx said it was either that or went under completely. “With diesel going for $873 a pint, we were out of options. Luckily for us, the folks at Tonka Tucks stepped up with a solution. They produced a tractor with 73 different gear ratios that can get up a 26% grade as fast as 1/4 mile an hour. The safety ratchet prevents the vehicle from careening backward while drivers massage IcyHot into their legs.”
The new trucks only come in bright yellow, but they do have cute squeezy horns on the steering wheel.
