The recent downturn in the trucking industry has left many drivers struggling to earn a living, as the price per mile has hit an all-time low. In a desperate bid to make ends meet, some truckers are turning to smuggle exotic pets.
“Times are tough out there,” said one driver. “I used to haul refrigerators and furniture, but now it’s all about parrots and chinchillas. It’s not ideal, but it pays the bills.”
While some trucking companies have cracked down on the practice, others have turned a blind eye in the face of mounting economic pressure.
“I don’t like it, but what choice do we have?” said one company owner. “Until the price per mile picks up, we must do what we can to keep our drivers on the road. And if that means turning a blind eye to a few monkeys in the back, so be it.”
