Retired Tire Trucker’s Tired Wheelchair Re-tired in Time for Her to Retire for the Night

93-year-old Maisie Lonnghall had almost lost hope that she’d be able to get to her bed one night last week after the tires on her 1952 Everest & Jennings wheelchair gave up the ghost. But a squad of elderly Marines came to her rescue.

Maisie drove trucks for the USMC in World War II, delivering loads of tires to the docks. After the war, she was a clerk in a Goodyear Tire warehouse for 47 years. Now retired on a pension, she needs her wheelchair to move around thanks to a dodgy knee she got in a Camp Lejeune bar fight in 1944. But the pension isn’t much, and she’s had to cut corners to get by, including wheelchair maintenance. Which is why she had to call for reinforcements when the tired rubber on her wheels started coming off in chunks.

Her geriatric Marine chums at the local VFW hall responded, bringing along friends from Maisie’s old employer. In a hot minute, her chair sported brand-new Endurance LHS’s. In gratitude, Maisie broke out the bourbon, which is how three ambulances, a fire truck, and a paddy wagon had to be called to her house.
