Independent driver Hal Loosinajen of Groovy, Oregon, had tried everything to alleviate the miserable feeling he always got at the end of the month when he received his paycheck. Hypnosis, transcendental meditation, handfuls of happy pills, even petting a puppy. But nothing helped him get over the feeling he was just trucking as an expensive hobby.
He was dubious when his doctor suggested trying experimental psilocybin, the active ingredient in so-called magic mushrooms. But desperate times called for desperate measures, and he agreed.
“I was amazed,” he related afterward. “Not only is my depression gone, but I had the most wonderful hallucinations. I was in a Technicolor world with a purple sun and a green sky. My truck never ran low on fuel, I was rested and alert at all times, every dispatcher and warehouse boss gave me a beer, and I had $18,000 in the bank every payday. Impossible, but spectacular.”
Hal no longer has depressive feelings, but now he’s constantly late on deliveries because he keeps stopping to dig for mushrooms in the woods.
