NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) has thrown truckers for a loop with their latest announcement for the Professional Drivers of the Year Award. Not only are they searching for drivers with stellar safety records and a commitment to industry leadership, but they have also added a new, unexpected criterion: the ability to parallel park a 53-foot trailer in under 10 seconds.
Betty “Buzzer-Beat” Johnson, a fictional spokeswoman for TCA, stated, “After revamping the program last year, we felt the competition needed a little extra… twist! What better way to showcase a driver’s skill than a high-pressure parking challenge?”
The announcement has been met with amusement and bewilderment from the trucking community. Tim “Ten-Wheel” Thompson, a made-up long-haul driver with over 20 years of experience, said, “I’ve faced down mountain passes, blizzards, and city traffic, but parallel parking in under 10 seconds? That’s going to be a sight!”
The updated criteria also include bonus points for candidates who can change a tire while humming their national anthem and dock a trailer with only a tiny, unhelpful parrot on their shoulder.
When asked about the new quirky requirements, TCA President, Mr. Bob “Big Rig” Roberts (also fictitious), chuckled and said, “We wanted to bring a bit of fun to the industry, and what’s more fun than watching top-tier drivers attempt the impossible? But remember, safety first!”
Despite the light-hearted approach, the stakes remain high. The lucky (or perhaps incredibly skilled) winner will bag a whopping $20,000 cash prize and be hailed as a trucking legend in TCA’s various publications throughout the year.
Interested nominees, feathered assistants, and bewildered onlookers are all encouraged to attend the TCA’s Annual Convention in Nashville, Tenn., from March 23-26, 2024. The parking lot, we’ve heard, will be packed!
